BOS Plaza Ribbon Cutting Ceremony
Prairie Capital Convention Center and the Bank of Springfield announce the ribbon cutting ceremony for the BOS Plaza. The event will be held from 5:00pm- 9:00pm on Friday, June 13th. Admission is free and there will be live music by Dave Littrell.
The Center will also be unveiling “Before I Die” boards, a living art installation that is interactive with the community. Before I Die is an art movement started by artist Candy Chang after she lost a loved one.
“It’s easy to get caught up in the day-to-day and forget what really matters to you. [Chang] wanted a daily reminder and wanted to know what was important to the people around her. So after receiving permission, she painted the side of an abandoned house in her neighborhood in New Orleans with chalkboard paint and stenciled it with a grid of the sentence, “Before I die I want to _______.” Anyone walking by could pick up a piece of chalk, reflect on their lives, and share their personal aspirations in public space.
It was all an experiment and she didn’t know what to expect. By the next day, the wall was full of responses and it kept growing.”
“One of the joys of my job at The Center is being able to be part of this community in so many different ways; be it through our public events, our annual conventions and trade shows, or the economic impact we provide for the city, “ says General Manager, Brian Oaks. “Many children come here for their first circus and then in the blink of an eye are walking across our stage as they graduate high school. Being even a small part of that is an honor,” he continues, “When I saw the ‘Before I Die’ movement, I knew we had to be a part of that. It is a unique opportunity for us to come together as a community and share our dreams, hopes, and aspirations for the future. The BOS Plaza and the recent renovations mark a new era in the history of The Center and we have big dreams to go along with it. We want to invite Springfield to stop by and pick up a piece of chalk.”
For more information visit:
The BOS Plaza is The Center’s new outdoor event facility, located between the Plaza Parking Garage and The Center’s lobby on the west end of the building. Bank of Springfield currently holds exclusive sponsorship rights to the newly renovated plaza per an agreement with Springfield Metropolitan and Auditorium Authority Board signed in March of 2014.
There are two concerts currently slated for the BOS Plaza. Brett Eldredge will perform there on June 27 and the Under the Sun Tour Featuring Uncle Kracker, Smashmouth, Blues Traveler and Sugar Ray on June 29.

Fighting Illini Basketball
Prairie Capital Convention Center to Host Illinois Basketball in November 2015
Fighting Illini will play total of 5 games in Springfield next season
SPRINGFIELD, ILL.–The University of Illinois Division of Intercollegiate Athletics (DIA) announced Thursday that it has reached an agreement with the Prairie Capital Convention Center in Springfield to host five Fighting Illini men’s basketball games in November 2015. Illinois will make its debut at the Prairie Capital Convention Center (PCCC) on Nov. 8, 2015, for an exhibition game. The Illini return to Springfield for the regular-season opener on Nov. 13, followed by another game on Nov. 15. The UI makes its final visit to the capital city the next week with games on Nov. 21 and Nov. 23.
“We are hard at work transforming State Farm Center into one of the finest basketball venues in the country. And as we have known since the beginning of the project, we will not be able to host games next season until December due to the renovation schedule,” Illinois director of athletics Mike Thomas said. “We will instead take our show on the road and are thrilled to partner with the Prairie Capital Convention Center as we move five home games to our state capital. The PCCC staff and community leaders throughout Springfield aggressively pursued this opportunity. They will roll out the orange carpet and allow us to transform the PCCC in November 2015 so that we can provide the best home-court advantage for our student-athletes and our program.”
Springfield is less than 90 miles from the UI campus. It provides a central location in the state that will be convenient for traveling Illini fans in addition to the strong following the program already receives from the Springfield area.
“Hosting the University of Illinois basketball team for five games next season is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for Prairie Capital Convention Center and the City of Springfield,” PCCC general manager Brian Oaks said. “We are so excited to be able to support the University during this time of renovation at State Farm Center, and are certain our local U of I faithful and Fighting Illini sports fans from around the state will support these games and provide a true home-court experience during the team’s stay here. In addition to the excitement of hosting these games, they will provide a significant economic impact to the City of Springfield and help further our mission of building tourism and quality of life opportunities for residents of Springfield and the surrounding communities.”
Illinois will recreate the feeling of playing at home by transporting the playing surface, baskets, bench chairs and scorer’s table from State Farm Center to the PCCC. Specific information regarding tickets for the Springfield games will be announced at a later date.
“Our administration was aggressive in seeking out a location that would serve as a true home away from home during the renovation of State Farm Center, and we have found an outstanding partner in the Prairie Capital Convention Center,” Illinois head coach John Groce said. “They have cleared every date that we requested, allowing us to tailor our game schedule and minimize our travel. We’re covering the five games in just three trips, going over first for an exhibition game and then twice where we’ll play two games over three days, staying for practice on the days in between those games as well. We feel privileged to showcase Fighting Illini basketball in Springfield.”

When Kerry Cusick arrived at the new Bank of Springfield Plaza for the Under the Sun Tour concert Sunday evening, she was skeptical about watching from her seats in the Prairie Capital Convention Center parking garage.
“But once I saw it, I thought it was really cool. Really well done,” Cusick, 20, of Springfield, said.
The BOS Plaza's visitors — among the first for the downtown venue — were treated to a quadruple-play of popular bands as Sugar Ray, Smashmouth, Blues Traveler and Uncle Kracker performed their hits from the 1990s and 2000s.
Cusick came to the show with Lauren Henderson, 19, of Springfield and Scott Sexton, 20, of New Berlin. They watched from the fourth level of the PCCC parking garage, overlooking the bandstand and downtown.
“I think it's gorgeous. It's absolutely gorgeous,” Henderson said. “It's a little different than most of the events down here. It's new, people are attracted to it. It opens up more opportunities that downtown Springfield can have,” she said.
She said that while there are other places to see an outdoor concert, shows held at the BOS Plaza are the only ones with a rooftop view.
Cusick said she liked the venue because music fans of all ages could come see the bands.
Sexton agreed that the addition of the venue made downtown more accessible to people his age. “I'm not into the whole downtown scene since I'm underage. Other than bars, there's not much down here to do socially,” he said.
A large, open-air concrete pad dominates the 8,300-square-foot venue where the bulk of the 1,500 or so attendees saw the show.
Fans could also watch from the edge of each of the four levels of the adjacent parking garage or from a VIP terrace on the second level of the Center. Bill and Cathie Bryant of Springfield, who caught the show from the second level of the parking garage, thought the venue was a success, too.
“I think it's really neat, I really do,” Bill, 55, said.
“We didn't know at all what to expect, really. It's a nice surprise,” said Cathie, 56.
“It definitely changes the landscape (of downtown),” she said. “I think it attracts more tourism, which we want.”
Cathie said the BOS Plaza takes the ball the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum got rolling and runs with it.
“That (the museum) has done so much good, and the more we can add to that, the better,” she said.
